Adoptions are governed by statute and require strict compliance. The strict compliance required by the courts is to protect all the parties involved; the child or adult being adopted, the adopting parent(s) and the natural parents. Although you are not required to have a lawyer represent you in an adoption, an attorney can ensure that the required information is compiled, properly presented to the court, and that legal procedures are followed.
